The Power of the Purse 2024:

The Women’s Fund Celebrates Fisk University Gymnastics with Coach Corrinne Tarver as Keynote Speaker.

The timing couldn’t have been more perfect for a ballroom of attendees to gather in support of The Women’s Fund at The Power of the Purse® luncheon featuring keynote speaker, Coach Corrinne Tarver.

Coach Tarver joined Fisk University to lead the country’s first gymnastics program at a Historically Black College & University (HBCU) in 2022. As a student-athlete at the University of Georgia, Corrinne became the first Black gymnast to win an NCAA all-around championship. Her success continued as she earned an undergraduate degree in social work from UGA, followed by a law degree from New York Law School.

With a wealth of experience in college athletics and more than 30 years of gymnastics coaching, Tarver is an example and inspiration for all. She has navigated unchartered territory for women in gymnastics with style, strength, and grace.

Her trailblazing impact set the stage for her own team to excel at the USA Gymnastics (USAG) Women’s Collegiate National Championships in Philadelphia, PA this past weekend where three Fisk University gymnasts — Liberty Mora, Zyiaa Alexys, and Morgan Price — were named First Team All-Americans.

Price, a native of Lebanon, Tennessee, scored 39.225 to become the first USAG Collegiate National Champion from an HBCU.

The Power of the Purse®, sponsored in part by First Horizon Bank, also featured a silent auction of more than 70 designer handbags, signature jewelry, and lifestyle experiences and opened with a welcome from event co-chairs, Lauren Master and Amanda Schwartz.

The annual luncheon is a gathering of many of Nashville’s most influential women, farsighted philanthropic leaders, and The Women’s Fund grantee partners who come together to share inspirational stories and a meal while raising money to benefit programs serving Middle Tennessee.

The Women’s Fund was established in 1994 by a committee of brave community leaders who wanted to invest in long-term solutions for transforming the lives of women and girls and thus improve the well-being of our entire community. Humbly beginning with eight $500 grants, The Women’s Fund grantmaking capacity has grown every year and has granted more than $2.8 million to 160 area nonprofit partners in our region.

The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.
