Community Foundations: What’s the Big Idea

Community Foundation building daytime

Most of us are familiar with the saying that actions speak louder than words. Philanthropy is one of those actions that truly does speak louder than words, delivering benefits that make a real difference in the lives of those less fortunate and those seeking greater opportunities. When it comes to philanthropy, it is also true that we are able to do even more together than we could do individually (especially for those of us not named Gates, or Rockefeller, or Scott).

It is this idea that gave rise to the first community foundations over 100 years ago: individually and collectively our generosity makes a real and lasting difference; not only today, but for years to come. And through the power of compound interest relentlessly growing endowed funds, our impact continues to increase – just the way private foundations grow over time.

But wait, there’s more! Community foundations are trusted partners working with nonprofits and residents to identify solutions to the challenges facing our communities. Community foundations are also an extraordinary resource of local knowledge about the most pressing issues and effective nonprofits best able to challenge to tackle those issues. This wealth of experience is available for every donor to power their philanthropy.

Think of that, all the benefits of a private foundation at a fraction of the cost! And even that cost is plowed right back into the community through civic leadership and collaborative efforts to the complex issues like affordable high-quality early childhood education, housing, and health care.

These are just some of the reasons why, after a quarter century, I remain so passionate about the possibilities and realized impact of community foundations.

I have seen the difference community foundations make during some of the most challenging circumstances we have faced: from the financial crisis in 2009 to the pandemic in 2020, and through countless natural disasters (including personally riding out a Category 5 hurricane), challenges that Middle Tennessee knows only too well.

Community foundations are the first responders of philanthropy, there when life throws us the toughest challenges, and there to help build a better tomorrow. The permanent and donor advised funds stewarded by CFMT are a resource for what matters most today and for the long run, and reservoir of essential funds available when the need is greatest.

Because community foundations are deeply rooted in the communities they serve, they have been called the quintessential anchor institution whose sole mission is to serve its community.

The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.
